The benefits of 3d printing for architects and construction companies
Gain insights on how 3d printing works, what materials to use, and what components you can 3d print. Learn how to work with digital models and how to prepare these for 3d printing. See how to capture real-world data and edit in your processes.
We have invited users that will show how they successfully utilize 3d printing in their work with architectural models, prototypes or 3d printed functional parts for construction.
During 3dp Build, you will have the opportunity to take a closer look at various 3d printers, printed components, materials, 3d scanning and software tools that are used in the 3d print workflows.

The promise of full scale concrete 3d printing
There are currently several research projects on full scale concrete 3d printing around the world – China, USA, UK, Germany and France, to name a few. There's also an interesting startup in Denmark. We have invited the construction consultants from Larsen & Partner, who will walk you through their research as well as others. They will also give a detailed view of the benefits of full scale 3d printing and its impact on your work as an architect. Speaker: Simon Klint Bergh, mechanical engineer/application manager, Larsen & Partners

THE DIGITAL WORKFLOW
The architecture of 3d printing
In an industry that is constantly moving and developing it is important to apply a dynamic process and always find new ways to adapt to ever emerging challenges. The aim is to contour the architecture of 3D printing by focusing the presentation on the process of handling already made architecture BIM models. By manipulating the data for 3d printing, going through different stages of development, one can get quite a comprehensive understanding of how this technology works and how one can use it as an advantage. To support the presentation tips & tricks will be presented as well as a showcase of successful prints. Speaker: Stefania Dinea, SWECO
Data capture tools and methods
A walkthrough of various technologies for 3d scanning, how to 3d scan, how you import and work with scan data and the main arguments for when and when not to use 3d scanning in your workflow. Speaker: Patrik Folkesson, Chief Technology Officer, Xtura
Think big – print big
There's no need to shy away from larger formats when you think of 3d printing. Today, there are several 3d printers that have build volumes over one cubic meter. They mainly work with plastic materials. But how do you work with larger 3d prints in terms of software, file preparation and machine handling? And what type of technology and material should you use? We have invited the 3d printing engineer Adam de Kaminski to help you out. Speaker: Adam de Kaminski, engineer and consultant
"Tree-D" printed housing
Concrete and oil based materials leave massive carbon footprints that affect the Earth. The construction sector is one of the largest producers of waste, and we need new efficient materials and methods for long-term sustainability. Full scale 3d printing using wood based materials is one possible solution. There are currently two Swedish research projects on wood and cellulose materials – Would Wood and Tree-D printing. In this presentation, we take look at the challenges and possibilities. Speaker: Mikael Lindström, senior researcher, RISE Bioekonomi
Hot and cold drinks, and something to satisfy your sweet tooth. Feel free to take a look at the exhibition.
THE DIGITAL TOOLBOX
Tools and methods for innovative construction with 3d printing
3d printing and digitization both play a substantial role in innovative and sustainable design and construction. But we need new software tools for design and decision-making. These tools must integrate a selection of processes, constraints, time-span, and performance criteria that are relevant to all stakeholders. This presentation will provide examples of current applications, as well as a discussion on future opportunities. Speaker: Nathalie Labonnote, SINTEF Byggforsk
Full scale 3d printing in Sweden
The +Project at Umeå University aims to research if full scale 3d printing using bio materials can be used to produce housing. The new project manager, Åke Fransson, will outline this interesting project and show potential ramifications for a more sustainable construction technology. Speaker: Åke Fransson, +Project, Umeå University
Projects & processes at Snøhetta
Prized architectural firm Snøhetta has a full-fledged workshop with four different 3d printing technologies. In this presentation, Snøhetta's workshop manager will describe how they produce their architectural models, and how they have built an efficient production workflow that cater for different needs. Speaker: Carsten Løddesøl, workshop manager, Snøhetta
